It's in the OINK!
The same week we found out we are expecting, we bought piggy bank. In all honesty, we're not a couple you'd use as a good case study for sound savings techniques. Far from it. However, we knew if we didn't stow away some cash here and there, we'd be sorry. We weren't exactly sure why . . . but in the back of our minds -- saving was better than the alternative.
But what were we saving for?

At first, we had absolutely no idea. Stephen's a teacher and we both value education very much. College, though, isn't what this bank is for. We have been prettying up our nursery -- trying to remain frugal along the way. Home decor for the baby is not what this bank is for. There are nights when we need cash for Chinese food because we're too tired to cook. Laziness is not what this bank is for.
Still, we continue tossing cash, which isn't a common commodity in our household, into this piggy as we receive it (all of my birthday/holiday money from family, for example, is in there).

Then a couple weeks ago, it hit me: I was browsing through a local newspaper and saw a swim class for babies advertised. And kid-friendly museums, zoos, and other spots. Mommy and Me yoga classes. So many cool things to DO and SEE. Things we both really want to expose Pequeña to for years to come. Thing is . . . they all cost money.
All of a sudden, those dollar bills started to make cents. Errr, sense.

How much do we have in there? I have no idea. But we won't spend it all in one place -- that's for sure. We plan to use it for the types of classes/things I listed above and as a minor emergency fund (we have money set aside for the BIG stuff, too). We don't know what those first weeks or months will be like. We don't know what we might have forgotten to include on our registry (or what we might not get). We have no clue if the baby will like breastfeeding or will need expensive formula.
The list goes on.

The piggy is our security blanket. And I'm proud that we haven't dipped into it once. (OK. There was that ONE time when I needed cash to pay a friend, but I replenished the amount -- and then some -- ASAP).
Did you start saving right away for your baby? If so, how did you save? And what did you stash those dollars away for? Any suggestions for us? Just leave a comment or email us at neverhomemaker [at] gmail [dot] com.
